1833 Bill of Sale For Seven Slaves. Manuscript bill of sale for $2,900 for seven slaves by Henry Smith of Tennessee to W. J. Hamilton of Louisiana, one page, 9½ x 7¾", Dec. 24, 1833. The slaves sold were Hetty, 22 years old, with her children George, 5 years old, Amistad, 3 years old, and Lilly, 18 months old for $1,100; also, Angeline, 16 years old, for $600; Lucy, 16 years old for $600; and July, 18 years old, for $600. Smith warrants "the said negroes slaves for life, and sound both of body & mind…." On verso, Hamilton notes that he returned July to Mr. Smith for the $600 paid, and that Smith paid him $50 for the child Lilly, "who has some burns…& the child retained with its mother." Very good; some edge splits at folds.

"ANTI-SLAVERY MEETINGS", Printed by the Western Anti-Slavery Society of Salem, Ohio [1850]. Rare broadside, 16 x 10½", Homestead Print, Salem, Ohio, [1850], intended to be filled out for a specific event. It reads: "Union with Freemen--No Union with Slaveholders. ANTI-SLAVERY MEETINGS! Anti-Slavery Meetings will be held in this place, to commence on… at… in the…. To be Addressed by Agents of the Western ANTI-SLAVERY SOCIETY. Three millions of your fellow beings are in chains -- the Church and Government sustains the horrible system of oppression. Turn Out! AND LEARN YOUR DUTY TO YOURSELVES, THE SLAVE AND GOD. EMANCIPATION or DISSOLUTION, and a FREE-NORTHERN REPUBLIC!"
The Western Anti-Slavery Society was headquartered in Salem, Ohio and was one of the more radical abolitionist groups, active on the Underground Railroad and the publisher of the Anti-Slavery Bugle. The group's meetings featuring speakers such as William Lloyd Garrison and Frederick Douglass. Copies of this broadside are rare. One copy resides in the collections of the Library of Congress (Printed Ephemera Collection; Portfolio 137, Folder 4), and another is at Yale University. OCLC# 59557224. Slight fading; minor toning and soiling. Matted and framed to an overall size of 18¾ x 13¾".

Three Slave Bills of Sale, 1773, 1843, and 1846 (1) Manuscript document signed by N. Browning, 3¾ x 5½, Hartford, July 5, 1773, in receipt of nine pounds for "One Black Man about 16 hands high [5 feet, 4 inches], from Wm. Laurence." Witnessed by Morgan Goodwine and Nath. Flower. On the verso, Goodwine signed a note on the same day that he received a black man from Wm. Laurence and promised to deliver him on Monday, Aug. 1 to Laurence's house. Soiled with heavy fold wear; archival repairs to folds on verso. (2) Autograph document signed by John L. Terrell, one page, 12¾ x 8", Wake Co., NC, Dec. 23, 1843. Acting on behalf of an estate, Terrell attests that he "…proceeded to sell at public sale Sundry Slaves according to law…among the number was Ziepha and her two children Eliza & Mary….David Pace became the last and highest bidder at the price of [$558]…on a credit of eight months…." Very good. (3) Manuscript document signed by A.C. Wharton, one page, 10 x 7¾", State of North Carolina, Davidson County, Oct. 24, 1846. A bill of sale acknowledging receipt of $580 from Harison M. Eakels for a negro girl and her child, Junius. Light toning and staining.
